About Us

Common Readings is monthly neighbourhood reading series, by candlelight, the third Monday of each month, hosted by Daniel Renton, mostly, at the Belljar Cafe.

The series was created in 2012 by poet, musician, and translator, Jessica Moore. After a transitional co-organizing period circa 2014-2015, Daniel inherited the helm of the series following Jessica's relocation to Montreal. Jessica is still involved in the organizing when she is available.

More recently, Vincent Colistro and Peter Jermyn have been recruited as occasional guest hosts and administrative support. Kate Wright helped organize our satellite reading in Halifax. And Malcolm Sutton has been involved as guest host in the past.

One of the fundamental goals at Common readings is to create an environment that supports all aspects of diversity within the Toronto community and beyond.

Another goal is to create a forum where both emerging and established writers can be exposed to new work from those at differing stages of their career.

In light of these goals, every Common Reading is an opportunity for a variety of voices to interact in the ambition to establish aesthetic dialogue.

The series is fully non-profit and volunteer. All pay-what-you-can donations received at the series are go solely to support the authors.

Continued thanks to the Belljar cafe, as well as our other past and present venues, for their kind support.
